What is Softscaping?
Softscaping encompasses all the living, organic elements of your landscape — lawns, garden beds, shrubs, groundcovers, mulch, and soil amendments. While hardscaping provides structure, softscaping provides the warmth, color, and natural beauty that make a property feel like home.
At TRP Build Co., we treat softscaping as a craft. Every plant is selected for its mature size, growth habit, light requirements, and seasonal contribution — then installed with proper soil preparation, spacing, and establishment care to ensure long-term success.
Garden Beds and Planting
Our garden bed installations begin with soil testing and amendment — adding compost, peat, or specialized mixes to create the ideal growing medium for your plants. Beds are edged with clean, defined borders using steel edging, natural stone, or spade-cut edges.
Plant selections are layered by height, texture, and bloom time — tall anchors at the back, mid-height fillers in the center, and low groundcovers or edging plants at the front — creating depth and visual interest from every angle.
Sod & Lawn Installation
A healthy lawn starts below the surface. We prepare sites with proper grading, topsoil importation (minimum 4–6 inches of quality loam), starter fertilization, and precise sod installation with tight seams and full root-to-soil contact.
We source premium turf varieties suited to your property's sun exposure and traffic levels — from shade-tolerant fine fescue blends to durable Kentucky bluegrass for full-sun play areas. Every sod installation includes a detailed watering schedule to ensure successful establishment.
Mulching & Soil Health
Mulch is far more than decoration — it regulates soil temperature, retains moisture, suppresses weeds, and feeds the soil as it decomposes. We install 2–3 inches of premium hardwood, cedar, or pine bark mulch across all planting beds.
For long-term soil health, we incorporate organic compost, mycorrhizal inoculants, and slow-release fertilizers at planting time. Healthy soil biology is the foundation of a landscape that improves year after year with minimal chemical inputs.

EXPERT ADVICE
Our Recommendations
1
Start by planning how you want to use your outdoor space and what kind of feeling you want to create: lush, colorful, serene, or low-maintenance, before choosing plants, trees, or garden layouts.
4
Combine softscaping with hardscaping to create balance. Use trees, shrubs, perennials, and mulched garden beds to soften hard edges, add layers of color and texture, and make your outdoor space feel more natural and inviting.
2
Consider long-term maintenance from the beginning. Choose plants, trees, and grasses that match the time and effort you’re comfortable investing each season, including pruning, watering, and seasonal cleanup.
5
Think about lighting, access, and safety when designing planting areas, garden paths, steps, and level changes. Strategic plant placement can enhance beauty while guiding movement and improving usability at night.
3
Invest in proper soil preparation and amendment before planting. Healthy soil is the foundation for thriving plants, strong root systems, better drainage, and long-term success with less ongoing work.
6
Set a realistic budget and prioritize key areas first. Focus on high-impact softscape elements like entry gardens, foundation plantings, and main gathering spaces before expanding to secondary areas.
